Strong Current Shop

The Problem

For customers interested in creating beautiful design objects themselves, often face the challenge the challenge of finding all the necessary materials to bring them to life. A lack of time in their day to day adds another restraint.

Customers are frequently frustrated with having to search online and offline for the materials they require for DIY projects.

This leads them to unintentionally lose track of their primary goal: nurturing their creativity and building something unique and beautiful themselves.

The Solution

Strong Current, a responsive webshop, unlocks creativity with stress-free and curated DIY design kits. All kits contain high quality materials with clear manuals by independent designers.

Scenario-based usability tests

With a scenario-based prototype I tested the flow for the user story:

Find, select and purchase one item and easily adjust the amount at any step of the way.

You are a new customer at Strong Current and would like to look around and then buy

a design set.

  1. What steps would you take?

  2. You would like to view the product info, what do you do?

  3. Now you decide to just select the manual, how do you do this?

  4. You would like to remove an item from your cart, say you selected too many. Please proceed.

Very clearly designed and self-explanatory on how to proceed to the payment process.

Feedback from Testee

Strong Current needs to communicate clearly

Strong Current's homepage must instantly convey the essence of the shop through clear visuals and concise descriptions. This ensures visitors understand the concept – curated DIY design kits – within seconds of landing on the page.

The DIY kit images need to be inspiring and enticing, with a lot of detail picture of what they contain.

Strong Current’s voice is:
Human
Clear (no jargon)
Technical terms will always be explained
Friendly
Encouraging
Inspiring

We value clear simple copy that encourages to build and create.

We differentiate between content types and adjust our tone accordingly. It can be simple, straightforward, encouraging and with a touch of humor.

We make sure to use simple language where we can and explain terminology or concepts that are complex.

Our aim is to motivate Strong Current users. We love to see them start their new project promptly and want to support them in completing it, so that they can fully enjoy their hand-made results.

Filters for Goal-Oriented Customers

My research revealed that younger users tend to be slightly more impatient and jump right to the filters to receive direct results. They leverage the filter results to learn about the shop and its essence, while scanning the available options at the same time.

Homepage Components
  1. Main teaser with an attention grasping project that is doable

  2. Filters for those that want to jump right in without browsing

  3. Intro to the shop concept in easy digestible steps with icons

  4. Further Design Sets to inspire and ignite a desire to explore

  1. Level-Explainer

  2. Pre-selected (filtered) sets according to the easiest and most difficult level

  3. Designers and their studios introduced. They usually design for large design manufacturers, this makes their designs extra special and real designer objects. This sections allows for further discovery.

Optimizing the DIY Kit Experience: A Retrospective

The creative freedom was one of the highlights of this project. In my role as the solo UX/UI Designer for Strong Current, I had the opportunity to shape the strategy, design and patterns. Going forward I plan to conduct interviews for more extensive qualitative data, to enrich and refine the customer journey, content strategy and designs.

A breakdown

I recommend conducting additional usability tests for the remaining key flows, with a particular focus on the selection or filtering experience. I anticipate this to be important for the customer to find design sets that suit their ability. Given that finding what fits is an essential user need, filtering should function seamlessly and actively support customers in their selection process.

To make Strong Current truely sustainable I envision a personalized recommendation service that helps design enthusiasts find their ideal DIY kit the first time round. Understanding customer needs and suggesting perfect matches up front, will potentially minimize returns and maximizing creative satisfaction.
